A Day at the Field Museum

 Hey there. :)

In an effort to see more of the space that I live in before looking for a way out, I've been trying to visit more spots around Chicago that I haven't been to in a long while, or ever. A few weeks ago, we went to the Field Museum during their touring exhibit, Appsalooke Women and Warriors. I haven't been to the Field Museum since maybe third grade which was around the time Sue had just arrived. She is now settled in her own exhibit and her space in the lobby has been taken over by Maximo.

Starting from the third floor and working our way down, we went through the rock & gem exhibit and got to see our birthstone collections. Next, was the Regenstein Hall of the Pacific, which was an exhibit that took us through life in different Pacific islands such as New Guinea, Hawaii, and the Philippines.

The third floor is also where Sue was permanently homed to. I remember my school visit being around the time she first arrived, and it's still very cool to me how much of her is real and salvaged. She's at the end of an entire dinosaur exhibit where I also scored a blue Mold-A-Rama of a Quetzalcoatlus. :-)

I didn't take any photos inside of the exhibit, but heading down to the main floor was the Appsalooke Women exhibit. I've linked their highlight on the Field Museum website above for you to check out. Telling about a tribe in Montana, it walked us through the meaning of beading, the creation of shields used in the tribe and the women who look over them, and ending the exhibit on the current fashion of women in the tribe. It did cost extra to go see, but it was totally worth every cent, especially being able to watch the beading up close on video.

The last few exhibits we saw were Africa and Ancient Egypt. The last time my partner was at the Field Museum was the time that King Tut was there (which was also a long time ago and also very cool.) We were able to experience art and lifestyles in different countries in Africa and also explore the timeline of Africa in the past to present day.
Egypt has always been interesting to me since reading Zora Keaton Snyder's The Egypt Game in fourth grade, so to visit an exhibit dedicated to it as an adult was one of the museum highlights for me. There are mummified people and animals across the room, as well as sarcophaguses and examples of tombs and how they would be adorned.

Personally, the Field Museum was a one-and-done for me. Many of the permanent exhibits are a bit outdated and could use some extra love and refurbishing, such as the Africa and Pacific rooms. It's not as interesting to me as something more interactive, but it was still really cool to revisit and spend the day in, especially with visits to the Museum of Science and Industry and the Shedd Aquarium in the close past.

But! If you're in the area and have the opportunity to see the Appsalooke Women exhibit, please take advantage of it because it was amazing.

Thanks for reading. :)
