Coffee Chats · Comparison and Social Media

Hello. (:
It's been a while since we've just sat and chatted, and I think it's well overdue. With the rebrand, I almost forgot about Coffee Chats until I saw this quote floating around my tumblr, and it was a sign from the universe to come on here and talk a bit about how much this spoke to me, and how important I think this is.

We all live in the age of social media. Everywhere you turn you are surrounded by people who seem to be doing better than you in a multitude of ways, and it's difficult to disregard when these people are literally at your fingertips. I find it tricky to applaud people for how well they are doing, and find myself getting bitter instead because I can't measure up. This applies to a variety of things: looks, school, jobs, money, experience, etc.

Comparison as a whole isn't healthy. We all grow at our own pace. We figure out who we are, achieve our goals, and get to the next step at our own speed. It's hard to keep this in mind while we scroll through so many other people's lives every day and they seem to be doing better than us. Someone else's success does not equate your failure. It's about

One thing I try to keep in mind is you can't compare your real life to somebody's controlled online content. You only see people when they're looking their best, and when they're doing things outside of the mundane because that's what they choose to share on social media. Behind the scenes, they're growing and grinding, too. Your opportunities and success will come. Just because somebody's have come to them first doesn't make you any lesser of a person or demote the hard work you give.

I'm going to leave you with a few quotes I've seen that help me through discouragement:
Don't compare your Chapter 10 to someone else's Chapter 20.
Every minute you spend wishing you had someone else's life is a minute spent wasting yours.

A flower foes not think of competing with a neighboring flower, it just blossoms.

We won't be distracted with comparison if we are captivated with purpose.

I love you all. Have a good week.
